Nigeria’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have received a fresh boost as Bankit Microfinance Bank unveiled its Bumper SME Grant Programme, a strategic initiative designed to provide financial support and business development opportunities for entrepreneurs across the country. The programme is part of the bank’s broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem while promoting digital financial inclusion.
Unlike conventional lending schemes that primarily focus on credit facilities, the new initiative combines business grants, structured marketing support, and brand visibility opportunities for eligible SMEs. Through the Bankit’s Business Account platform, startups, micro-enterprises, and growing businesses will have the opportunity to access funding that can help them expand operations, improve productivity, and create employment.
Speaking on the launch, the bank’s Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing, Kingsley Ezenwa, emphasized that financial institutions must evolve beyond traditional banking services by becoming active partners in business growth. According to him, entrepreneurs need more than access to banking—they need opportunities, visibility, and strategic support that can accelerate their journey toward sustainability.
In addition to the grant programme, Bankit also introduced a nationwide Card Rewards Initiative aimed at encouraging digital payment adoption. Customers who use Bankit payment cards will enjoy discounts, cashback offers, and exclusive rewards through partnerships with merchants across various sectors. The dual initiative seeks to stimulate both entrepreneurship and Nigeria’s transition toward a cashless economy.
Why This Matters
Access to finance remains one of the greatest challenges facing Nigerian SMEs. Many promising businesses struggle to secure affordable capital needed for expansion, technology adoption, inventory growth, and market penetration. Grant programmes such as this provide an alternative source of support without adding debt burdens, enabling entrepreneurs to invest confidently in their businesses.
Industry experts have consistently noted that SMEs account for the majority of businesses in Nigeria and contribute significantly to employment generation. Initiatives that combine funding with mentorship, visibility, and financial inclusion have the potential to strengthen business resilience, stimulate innovation, and contribute meaningfully to national economic development.
IEAMA Perspective
The Institute of Entrepreneurship and Apprenticeship Management and Administration (IEAMA) welcomes initiatives that expand access to finance and business development opportunities for entrepreneurs. Sustainable economic growth requires collaboration between financial institutions, government agencies, professional bodies, and the private sector to ensure entrepreneurs receive not only funding but also the knowledge, mentorship, and institutional support needed to build competitive and resilient enterprises.
As Nigeria continues to pursue economic diversification, programmes like Bankit’s SME Grant Programme demonstrate how innovative financial institutions can play a transformative role in empowering entrepreneurs, supporting startups, and creating sustainable employment opportunities across the country.
