Nigeria’s entrepreneurship ecosystem is seeing renewed attention on one of its most persistent challenges: access to affordable finance for small and growing businesses.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding MSMEs’ access to finance, markets, technology and other business-support systems, with an emphasis on helping enterprises move from survival to sustainable growth. She made the remarks at the opening of the 21st Abuja International Trade Fair.

The development comes as new financing models are also emerging across Africa. FSD Africa has launched its Manager Finance Facility, designed to provide catalytic capital to alternative local finance providers developing models such as revenue-based finance, flexible equity, venture debt and blended finance for small and growing businesses. The initiative includes a Nigeria window supported by the UK Government.

For Nigerian entrepreneurs, the issue goes beyond simply having funding programmes available. Businesses need financing that matches their cash-flow realities, growth stage and investment needs, alongside stronger financial records, governance, technology and market access.

The focus on women-led enterprises is also growing. Alitheia Capital and more than 300 women-led businesses recently called for financing solutions tailored to enterprises in manufacturing, agribusiness and nutrition, highlighting continuing barriers around capital, energy, technology and markets.

What This Means for Entrepreneurs

The current developments point toward a broader shift in Nigeria’s enterprise ecosystem: from simply providing funding to building businesses that can use capital effectively and grow sustainably.

For entrepreneurs, investment readiness will increasingly involve strong financial management, proper business structures, credible records, market knowledge, technology adoption and the ability to demonstrate a clear path to growth.

For IEAMA, this reinforces the importance of professionalising entrepreneurs and preparing enterprises not only to access finance, but to become ready for sustainable investment and expansion.
